(Bonus Tip from my Modern Marquise Skirt Sew-Along)
Choosing the correct size for the Modern Marquise Skirt can feel confusing, especially when your measurements fall between two sizes or when the hip curve needs a subtle adjustment.
In this video:
I walk through the exact process I use to choose my size following the sewing guide, compare my measurements to the size chart, and make a clean and accurate hip adjustment directly on the pattern.
You’ll also see how I shift the darts, how much width I remove from each side seam, and why I make different choices for the lining and for the main skirt pieces.
This video visualizes the instructions written in the sewing guide.
If you ever find it hard to imagine certain steps or understand the logic behind the adjustments, this walkthrough will help you follow the guide with confidence.

Following the sewing guide, I choose my size based on the waist measurement.
If your measurements fall between two sizes, the guide recommends choosing the larger size.
- My waist : 68 cm
- My hips : 91 cm
I’m choosing size 38:
Waist 70 cm — Hips 95 cm.
I’ll be adjusting only the hip measurement. (And the back darts)
Calculations:
95 − 91 = 4 ÷2 (side seams) = 2 ÷2 (front and back) = 1 cm.
I need to remove 1 cm from each side seam at the hip level.
Calculations: 95 − 91 = 4 ÷2 (side seams) = 2 ÷2 (front and back) = 1 cm.
I need to remove 1 cm from each side seam at the hip level.
Since this is a wrap skirt, a 1.5–2 cm difference at the waist is not critical.
I’m keeping the waist at 70 cm — which also works well if I want to tuck in a warm sweater.
By The Way: Because my pattern shows the true shape of the piece, I remove 1 cm from the actual pattern line as well as from the seam allowance, so I can clearly see how the shape of the hip curve changes during the adjustment.
