Introduction / About the Design

The Modern Marquise Skirt is my modern take on classic elegance. With clean lines and light draping, it gives a flattering shape that highlights femininity and a delicate waistline.

I was inspired by vintage couture details but kept the design simple enough for everyday wear. The skirt includes three hem options — asymmetric, straight, and shorter — so you can choose between a more bold or a more classic look.

Depending on the fabric you pick — from structured wool suiting to cotton or even textured denim — the Modern Marquise Skirt can look very different, but it always works as a versatile piece that easily goes from day to evening.

      – but written so that even a confident beginner can succeed.
  • Fabric Recommendations
    • This design works best with light- to medium-weight suiting fabrics such as wool suiting, jacquard, or structured cotton suiting. We do not recommend using lightweight dress fabrics such as shirting cotton, silk, or chiffon — they won’t hold the shape of the skirt properly.
    • Natural wool is especially suitable, as it falls into soft and elegant pleats. For a more festive look, you may choose fabrics with a subtle sheen or luster. If you use denim, the skirt will take on a more modern and casual character.
    • Keep in mind that the type of fabric you choose will strongly influence the look of the pleats: in wool they appear soft and flowing, while in cotton suiting they become sharper and more structured, almost like folded paper.
    • This skirt must always be sewn with a lining. The lining creates a smooth layer between the pleats and the knees — without it, the fabric will catch as you walk, which is uncomfortable and also spoils the silhouette.
    • The lining in this model is free-hanging (not attached at the hem). For the lining, it is best to use dedicated slippery lining fabrics such as viscose, polyester, or natural silk.

📐Fabric Requirements

✂️🪡Cutting Layout

The cutting layouts for each size are provided in the attached diagrams.

  • All pattern pieces are shown with the right side facing up.
  • Follow the grainline arrows carefully when placing pieces on the fabric.
  • All seam allowances are included. Where seam allowances are not shown (at four specific points), do not add them — this is part of the design.

Fabric-saving tips:

  • The hem facing may be cut as three pieces with a side seam, instead of one continuous piece, to save fabric.
  • Always check your fabric width before cutting and adjust the layout if necessary.
